A pashmina is a type of goat endemic to Kashmir, Ladakh, and
Himachal Pradesh regions of India. Its fleece has been used
for thousands of years to make high-quality shawls that also
bear the same name. They are known for softness and warmth.
Pashmina is simply "cashmere." The name is more
appropriate, corresponding to a local term for wool, while
cashmere reflects the colonialist perspective -- the [noted]
fabric of Kashmir.
Cashmere is goat wool, and is harvested from a high elevation
breed of Capra hircus, the ordinary domestic goat. Due to
the persistent conflict in Kashmir, most pashmina goats are
now raised in China, particularly Xinjiang and Mongolia. |
